February’s FEL featured not one but two talks on design systems: how to create a design system to unify your team, and how to surmount the challenges of introducing a design system to an existing code base.

Last week Made by Many hosted the latest meeting for Front End London (FEL) with two talks about how to use design systems for better collaboration, more consistency and faster delivery.

Dan Donald, front-end lead at Autotrader, spoke about the challenges you face when managing multiple sites on multiple platforms and having to contend with legacy code. Drawing on real world experiences from Autotrader, Donald shared the elements — many non-technical — that make design systems a success.

Matt Woods, developer at University of the Arts London, spoke about how they built a design system using Node, Webpack and the Figma API. UAL has over 100 websites, so a unified approach was vital in being able to share work across teams and manage consistency.

Front-end London is a free monthly meet-up hosted by Made By Many about front-end development and design. Stay tuned either on our website or Twitter for news of the next event. We’re always looking for new speakers and talks — if you have an idea for a talk email fel@madebymany.co.uk.
