TimeOut MxM 11
This week we're making our own speakers, learning about democracy in design, eating loads of cake and building a fantasy Lego bridge from London to New York City.
Tweet at @zociechowska if you'd like us to know about your cool thing.
What are we doing to become better workers/human beings?
It's the Global Design Forum next week so we're heading over to the Democracy in Design: The Modern Makers event on September 15.
If you want to attend the London Design Festival with your kids this year, take them to a Make Your Own Speaker workshop with Technology Will Save Us on September 21. (We also partnered with them last week!)
If you're into data and all that stuff, there's also a good looking event on Performance, profit and privacy in London September 23.
For those who are looking for motivation to pursue their artistic endeavours, Michael Atavar will be leading four evening sessions at Tate Modern on activating your creativity. The first one is on November 3.
Which articles are causing a stir in our office?
Maker Movement Reinvents Education - How the maker movement is teaching kids how to find, access and use information to teach themselves how to do what they want to do or make.
Who on earth would buy a digi-watch? Answer: NUDISTS. - Like the rest of the world, our offices are divided when it comes to Apple's newest product. So it's probably best that we just approach this with a good dose of humour.
Are we being short-changed by the currency of social media? - A short, smart think piece about whether social media still holds any value.
How many Lego bricks would it take to build a bridge between London and New York? - We'd like a Lego superhighway connecting our two studios. A brilliant excerpt from Randall Munroe's new book, What If.
Amazing sentences - A collection of some really good sentences from contemporary fiction.
What's on at the cinema?
A Dangerous Game is a documentary about Scotland and Donald Trump and how rapacious developers are using golf courses as a smokescreen to build luxury resorts that end up costing the earth. In cinemas next week.
Obvious Child is a hilarious comedy about being pro-choice. Jenny Slate plays the main character who, apart from being ridiculously funny, wears crocs, stuffs too much bread in her face, farts in bed and hides in boxes to avoid going out on dates with boys.
If you're planning on going to the London Film Festival this autumn, this list will tell you which female filmmakers will be showing their films there.
How are we entertaining ourselves?
Emoji One - An emoji set specifically designed for the web so you never get those pesky square symbols again.
And this video of a man trolling the Labour party with the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack as they walk down the streets of Glasgow is bloody brilliant.
What kind of art and design are we stroking our chins to?
We're heading down to Tate to hear Kenyan-born, NYC based artist Wangechi Mutu talk about her career, sketchbooks and the new directions in her practice in advance of her exhibition at Victoria Miro in mid October.
Over 50 new and iconic artworks by Ai Wei Wi will be on display throughout Blenheim Palace and its grounds from October 1.
Women in Clothes - Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits and Leanne Shapton surveyed over 600 women to learn about their relationship with clothes. They edited the thousands of answers they got into a book, a truly fantastic celebration of female individuality, self-expression and confidence.
What about sports?
Our first game of rugball (netball + rugby) was a huge success this Wednesday. We're still not fully agreed on the rules, but that's also what makes it fun.
What are we eating this week?
The Great British Bake Off is a great excuse to eat more cakes. Raffi surprised us with a delightful blueberry and lime drizzle ring cake today. We'd like to think that Mary Berry would be proud.
